Why local SEO matters for trades businesses
When a homeowner has a leaking pipe at 10pm, they do not flick through the Yellow Pages. They pick up their phone and search "emergency plumber near me." The plumber who appears at the top of that search gets the call. Everyone else gets nothing.
Local SEO is the process of making sure your business appears at the top of Google when someone in your area searches for the services you provide. For tradespeople, this is not a nice-to-have - it is essential for survival in an increasingly digital marketplace.
Google Maps: the most important real estate in local search
When someone searches for a local service, Google shows a map with three businesses underneath it. This is called the "Map Pack" or "3-Pack", and it receives the majority of clicks for local service searches. Getting your business into those three spots should be your primary SEO goal.
The three main factors that determine your Maps ranking are relevance (does your business match what the person is searching for?), distance (how close is your business to the searcher?), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed is your business online?).
Google Business Profile: your foundation
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single most important asset in your local SEO strategy. If you do not have one, create one immediately at business.google.com. If you have one but have not touched it in months, log in and update it today.
A complete, optimised Google Business Profile includes your correct business name (no keyword stuffing), accurate address and phone number, correct business hours, all relevant service categories, a detailed business description, high-quality photos of your work, and regular posts showing recent projects.
Reviews: the trust signal Google loves
Reviews are one of the strongest ranking factors for Google Maps and one of the biggest conversion factors for potential customers. A business with 50 five-star reviews will almost always outrank a business with 5 reviews, all else being equal.
The key to getting more reviews is simply asking for them. After every completed job, send a follow-up text or email with a direct link to your Google review page. Make it as easy as possible for happy customers to leave feedback.
Your website: the conversion engine
Your website works hand-in-hand with your Google Business Profile. While your GBP gets you found, your website converts visitors into enquiries. For tradespeople, an effective website needs clear service pages for each service you offer, your service area clearly stated, phone number and contact form prominently displayed, customer testimonials and reviews, and photos of your completed work.
Local citations: consistency is everything
A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). Citations on directories like Yell, Thomson Local, Checkatrade, and industry-specific platforms tell Google that your business is real, legitimate, and located where you say it is.
The most important thing about citations is consistency. Your business name, address, and phone number must be identical across every platform. Even small differences ("St" vs "Street", "Ltd" vs "Limited") can confuse Google and weaken your local rankings.
Content: answering the questions customers ask
Creating content that answers common customer questions is one of the most effective ways to improve your SEO. Blog posts like "How much does a boiler replacement cost?", "What is an EICR and do I need one?", or "How long does a loft conversion take?" attract visitors who are actively researching services you provide.
Getting started: your first 30 days
If you are starting from scratch, here is what to focus on in your first month. In week one, claim and fully optimise your Google Business Profile. In week two, ensure your website has a page for every service you offer. In week three, submit your business to the top 20 UK directories with consistent NAP information. In week four, ask your last 10 customers to leave a Google review. This foundation alone will start moving your rankings within weeks.
